An area of showers this morning will cross the region ahead of a cold front. As this front moves east, it will briefly pull up some humidity from the south, especially along the coast from about Brunswick south. Elsewhere, although there are clouds and some rain, the air won’t have that humid feeling.

The radar below from about 6 a.m. shows the showers quickly moving eastward. By the time your read this blog, they could be completely off the coast.

Traditionally, summer means warmth and summer humidity. That’s the part of summer many of us don’t enjoy. The deeper in to June we go, the more difficult it becomes to have super dry comfortable air for many days in a row and when do have comfortable air; it’s more of a welcome treat. In July and the first half of August, several days of low humidity become ever more rare, especially over southern Maine.

Overall I am going to give this weekend a 7.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Tomorrow is close to a 10 and Sunday is a 5. The reason for the lower score on Sunday is of course the chance of showers.

Beach Tides
This weekend our tides are generally high in the mid-afternoon period from about 2 to 4 p.m. Check your local tide chart for specifics, but that’s a rough idea of when they will occur.

Day Length
This is the weekend with the most amount of daylight of the entire year. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we start losing daylight on Monday and the sunrises have been growing later by a few seconds since Monday. Most of you won’t notice any change in the evenings for another 3 weeks, so don’t panic yet. If you are an early riser, you’ll notice the loss of 5 or 6 minutes of early morning light by months end.

Friday
Highs Friday will reach the 70s to lower 80s across New England. There will be more in the way of humidity, especially south of Portland. As you get north and west of the coastline, the air will turn drier as the afternoon progresses. This will set up a very nice and comfortable evening with cool reading by Saturday morning. Look for increasingly sunny skies from north to south Friday, along the immediate coast south of Rockland, expect much of the morning to be filled with clouds. If you do see any rain, the morning is when this will occur.

Saturday
This is the pick of the weekend. There is no chance of rain and there will be abundant sunshine. It might be a bit cool at the beaches, so don’t anticipate a warm day. However, the sun is at its strongest of the year, so even with pleasantly warm air, you can still get quite burned, very quickly.

Sunday
The moisture from what was tropical storm Bill will pass south of New England. As this happens a cold front from the west will interact with this and bring about a chance of some showers. This is the best chance of rain for the next 5 days. I know it’s Father’s Day and you might be thinking about cooking outside. I wouldn’t cancel plans, but I would be aware of the radar on Sunday and have a back-up plan in case showers impact the cookout. Some of the showers could be heavy at times, but I do expect several hours when it’s not raining as well.

Seasonably warm and pleasant weather returns for Monday with low levels of humidity and abundant sunshine. In spite of some very humid days so far this year, we seem to be, as of right now, in a good pattern of alternating humid days with dry ones, let’s hope it continues. Have a great weekend.
