AUGUSTA — A former office manager and treasurer at Winthrop United Methodist Church is accused of embezzling more than $10,000 in church funds over a two-year period.

Tricia L. Day, 33, of Winthrop, was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury Friday on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

According to the indictment, the church funds were stolen between Jan. 1, 2013, and Jan. 5, 2015. The case was investigated by the Winthrop Police Department. Capt. Ryan Frost said a total of about $30,000 in church funds is missing.

Frost said Day initially was issued a summons Feb. 19 to appear in court on a theft charge.

Pastor Ned Crockett said Monday that Day had worked for the church for 41/2 years and was fired at the end of December.

“It’s something that saddens the whole church,” Crockett said. “We all cared for her. It’s really difficult.”

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial. According to records at the Capital Judicial Center, Day is represented in the case by attorney Polly Reeves.
