AUGUSTA — Maine authorities say they will soon release the cause of death of a 59-year-old Vermont man who died at sea about 13 miles off of York Harbor.

A spokesman for the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says a cause of death for Forest Woodruff of Jamaica, Vermont, could be released as soon as this week.

An initial Coast Guard investigation found that Woodruff and 57-year-old Russell Smith of Jamaica dropped anchor the night of June 3 after Smith’s vessel engine started having problems. The Maine Marine Patrol says Smith awoke the next morning to find Woodruff dead near the open engine compartment.

A Coast Guard spokesman has said there’s nothing indicating the death was suspicious.
