A state prisoner serving a sentence for being a repeat habitual offender died in custody Monday morning at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.

The Maine Department of Corrections reported Monday that Jeppie Phillips, 51, had served about seven weeks of a nine-month sentence when he died at 2:30 a.m. Monday.

He was sentenced in Sagadahoc County Superior Court.

The Office of the State Medical Examiner and Maine State Police were notified and are investigating the death.
