Portland police have charged a 29-year-old man with burglary in connection with a rash of break-ins in the West End and Parkside neighborhoods over the past two weeks.

Police charged Richard Coleman, who has no fixed address, with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft as well as possession of burglary tools and possession of cocaine after his arrest at 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Cumberland Avenue. He also was charged with an outstanding felony theft warrant.

Police say they believe Coleman is connected to eight residential burglaries in 10 days, though at this point he is charged with a burglary on Brackett Street on June 20 and Deering Street on Saturday. The break-ins generally occurred during the day through unlocked windows or doors. In at least two of the burglaries, residents were home though nobody was injured.

Lt. James Sweatt, head of investigations for the department, said the arrest is very significant and complimented the work of patrol officers who had been on the lookout for Coleman after an arrest warrant was issued last week.

“This guy would not stop,” Sweatt said. “He was doing two every three days.” Sweatt said residential burglaries are considered more serious crimes than commercial burglaries in part because of the possibility of a dangerous confrontation between the criminal and a resident.

Stolen items included electronics and cash. Some of the items have been returned to their owners and police are still trying to identify the owners of some other belongings. Coleman is being held on $16,000 bail at Cumberland County Jail.
