WEST BARNSTABLE, Mass. —A piece of American history with a connection to a famous patriot is back on Cape Cod in time for July Fourth celebrations.
The Cape Cod Times reported the historic bell that sat atop the 1717 Meetinghouse in West Barnstable returned home Tuesday following its restoration in Ohio.
The bell, cast by the Paul Revere foundry in Boston in the early 1800s, cost $28,000 to repair.
Bruce Harkness, an installation and service engineer for Cincinnati’s Verdin Co., said the bell required a new frame, yoke, bolts, wheel and clapper.
The project was paid for with a portion of the $275,000 the 1717 Meetinghouse Foundation received in Community Preservation Act funds in 2013.
In attendance for the bell’s return was Paul Revere III, a fourth great-grandson of the patriot.
