A Chesterville teen is in critical condition after a swimming incident on Great Pond in Rome, in Kennebec County.

The boy was with two friends who had taken a boat to Crooked Island on Thursday afternoon, said Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service. The three boys moored off shore and tried to swim to the island when one of the trio went under.

The friends were able to get the boy out of the water and an off-duty nurse who was nearby provided treatment until Delta Ambulance arrived to take him to Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

The Maine Warden Service is investigating the incident.
