The U.S. Coast Guard called off a search Sunday morning for the source of signal flares in the area around Caldwell Island in Muscongus Bay after finding no signs of a disabled vessel.
Coast Guard crews in Maine had initiated the search Saturday night after a rescue vessel out of Rockland began receiving reports of flares in the area, the Coast Guard said. Caldwell Island island is about a mile and a half northwest of Port Clyde.
Coast Guard spokesman Christopher Kiener said Sunday that the flares were most likely being set off as part of someone’s Fourth of July celebration.
“We didn’t locate any vehicles in distress,” he said.
