I thank Sen. Angus King for his recent support of the HOPE (Health Outcomes, Planning and Education) for Alzheimer’s Act. This bill will give families and health care providers the educational tools they need to help those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

As a Maine family member who has gone through the medical minefield to help a loved one with this disease, I am grateful for Sen. King’s understanding.

His quote reflects this: “Giving patients and their families a better understanding of their situation and options moving forward can make all the difference, and that’s what the HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act is all about.”

I urge Sen. King to support an additional $300 million for Alzheimer’s research at the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2016 to help save millions of lives and trillions of dollars. The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee has just approved this increase.

Alzheimer’s is the only leading cause of death among the top 10 in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression – yet. To join the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, please visit alz.org or call the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association at 772-0115.
