Tyler Technologies has submitted preliminary plans to the town of Yarmouth for an expansion of its office building on Route 1 that would allow it to add more than 500 employees over the next 10 years.

The Texas-based software company now employs about 525 people at its offices in Falmouth and Yarmouth, both of which are on Route 1, according to a preliminary application filed with Yarmouth on July 1. Mitchell & Associates, a Portland-based architecture firm, submitted the preliminary plans on the company’s behalf. The Yarmouth Planning Board is scheduled to take up the preliminary application on July 22.

“Tyler, when it’s time for it, will be one of the largest expansions of jobs in Maine in a while,” said Denise Clavette, who became Yarmouth’s first economic development director when she was hired in January. “It’s not every day that a company adds 500 jobs in five to 10 years.”

Tyler Technologies develops software for municipalities and other government agencies, specializing in Enterprise Resource Planning – a suite of business management software with integrated applications. For instance, it develops software to run dispatch systems, mobile communications and record management for public safety agencies, and personnel and financial functions for school departments.

Although the company is based in Texas, Yarmouth is the headquarters for the Enterprise Resource Planning and school divisions. The building also houses some of the company’s cloud services, and is the location for several top executives, including CEO John Marr Jr. The company employs 3,100 across the country.

The Yarmouth office is on Route 1 on the Cumberland town line. Cole Haan built the three-story, 87,000-square-foot office building in 1992. Tyler Technologies acquired the property in 2008.

The company is proposing to build a connected four-story office building of about 85,000 square feet that would allow it to keep up with projected growth. The projected cost of the building is roughly $15 million, said Robert Sansone, the company’s vice president of human resources and the point person on the project.

In its preliminary application to the town, the company estimates that the staff at its combined offices in Yarmouth and Falmouth would grow to 1,100 employees by 2024.

Sansone said Tyler Technologies has grown steadily over the last 15 years and the expansion will enable it to keep pace with expected growth; the company’s locations in Falmouth and Yarmouth are already nearing capacity.

The 500 new jobs will range from software development positions to professional sales and marketing, Sansone said.

Clavette said the expansion is a coup for the town and will strengthen the local economy by increasing its tax base and providing good jobs.

“It will be a pinnacle” for the town’s economic development, she said.
