Fire destroyed an empty barn on Elder Road in Gray on Friday morning.

A passerby spotted and reported the fire at 5 Elder Road around 11:20 a.m. When firefighters arrived, the barn was in flames, said Capt. Nick Hutchins of the Gray Fire Department.

Hutchins said the barn was empty except for a lawnmower. The homeowner had gone to get parts to fix the mower and wasn’t home when the fire started.

The building was a total loss and the cause is unknown because of the extent of the fire, Hutchins said.

Gray was assisted on scene by firefighters from North Yarmouth, Raymond, Cumberland, New Gloucester and Windham. They had the fire under control within 30 minutes.

No one was injured.
