Chicago, with 2.7 million people, is the most violent large city in the United States, with poverty, segregation, dozens of small street gangs, and a pervasive gun culture all contributing to the problem.

JULY 10: The Confederate battle flag is permanently removed from the South Carolina statehouse grounds during a ceremony in Columbia, South Carolina. The flag was removed to chants of "USA, USA!," after three weeks of emotional debate over the banner, a symbol of slavery and racism to many, but of Southern heritage and pride to others. The Confederate flag was raised over the Capitol dome in 1961 to protest integration. It was moved in 2000 to a flagpole in front of the Statehouse. Its removal seemed unthinkable just a month ago but the June 17 massacre of nine black parishioners at a Charleston church reignited calls to remove Confederate symbols across the country.
JULY 10: Members of the U.S. women's soccer team wave as cheering fans shower the World Cup champions with a blizzard of confetti as they roll up New York City's "Canyon of Heroes" in the first ticker-tape parade honouring a women's sports team. The parade in lower Manhattan drew throngs of young girls and other flag-waving fans. The U.S. beat Japan 5-2 in Sunday's final in Vancouver to collect the top prize in women's soccer for the first time in 16 years.
