A new full-size replica of the Hermione, the ship that carried the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1780 to help the American revolutionaries fight the British, sailed into Castine on Tuesday afternoon. It is expected to depart Thursday morning. The town has scheduled a variety of events around the ship’s visit, including much music.

The ship started its journey in France in April and arrived in Yorktown,Virginia, in June. It will continue its journey to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The ship is 216 feet in length and 185 feet high.

The ship is not connected to Tall Ships Portland, an event scheduled in Portland Harbor this weekend, but certainly offers a preview of the ships expected to participated in that event.
