Meet the Junior League
The Junior League of Portland will host a meet and greet for potential new members from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rising Tide Brewing Company, 103 Fox St. in Portland.
Current members will be on hand to answer questions about how joining the Junior League can help women gain leadership skills, make new friends and give back to the community.

Updating computer skills
The Portland Public Library, at 5 Monument Square, is offering free classes for computer users looking to expand their skills.
Introduction to Word 2010 will be held twice, at noon on Wednesday and again on Aug. 19. Participants will learn Word 2010 and cover the fundamentals of word processing, including basic tools for editing and formatting Word documents.
There is limited space available. Participants must register in advance at the library’s public computing desk or by calling 871-1700, ext. 708.
Demonstrating t’ai chi
Michael Elliott will give a t’ai chi demonstration at noon Thursday in the Lewis Gallery of Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square.
Elliott will show a cross section of postures and practices, and will speak briefly on the value of these as a daily practice. He learned Cheng Man-Ch’ing’s short form in 1970, and has been expanding the vitality of its practice without interruption since then.
He teaches at Bay Studio and A Space for Grace in Portland; Ocean View Retirement in Falmouth; Studio Fit in Westbrook; and Basics Fitness in South Portland.

Talks about old cemeteries
The Maine Old Cemetery Association is offering a talk, “The Impact of Brunswick Naval Air Station on Neighborhood Cemeteries,” at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 320 Church Road.
The featured speaker is Barbara Desmarais, a local historian and cemetery researcher. The Pejepscot Genealogical Society will also present a program about the Gatchell Cemetery in Brunswick, including its history and current accessibility.
Registration will be from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and costs $3. The meeting will open with two presentations, followed by lunch at noon. A local Girl Scout troop will be serving lunch for $7. Advance lunch reservations are appreciated. A business meeting also is planned.
In the afternoon, participants are invited to visit Pine Grove Cemetery, the final resting place of Joshua Chamberlain and other prominent Brunswick families.

Film, music, more at library
Camden Public Library, 55 Main St., offers the following events this week:
The library will show the movie, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” at 8:30 p.m. Monday for free outside in the Amphitheatre. Bring blankets or chairs for comfortable seating.
Lou Sapienza will present the story of the Lost Squadron in his slide talk, “Greenland’s Bermuda Triangle,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the library. Sapienza was the photographer of the group that made the recovery from the glaciers of Greenland.
David Dodson will give a free concert at noon Wednesday in the Amphitheatre.
The Maranatha Youth Choir will perform at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Amphitheatre.
Author Michael Tougias will give a talk on “Overboard! A True Bluewater Odyssey of Disaster and Survival,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library, with slides of the 2005 storm, sinking sailboat, the crew and rescue missions the book is about.
KENNEBUNK
Theatre Workshop at library
Rhonda Verges will lead a four-day Theatre Workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 27-31 (with no class July 29) at the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St.
The workshop is geared to children ages 5 to 8. Students will bring a popular book to life through an adapted script, and will perform for family and friends on July 31.

Shakers’ Open Farm Day
Shaker Village, at 707 Shaker Road, will participate in the annual Maine Open Farm Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Family activities will include free guided tours of the 1830 barns by Brother Arnold Hadd, tractor-drawn wagon rides, honey bee display and hives, tours of the Shakers’ historic herb gardens and demonstrations of woodcarving, blacksmithing and yarn spinning. There also will be a bake sale, plant sale and barbecue lunch offered.
