LEBANON – A North Berwick man was critically injured Sunday evening after the sedan he was driving went off the road and traveled down an embankment before landing in a river.

State Trooper Mike Lane said the man, who was operating a new Chrysler 200 sedan, was traveling well over the speed limit when he hit a guardrail on the side of a bridge near 32 Fall Road in Lebanon. Lane said the vehicle’s speedometer got stuck at 60 mph – the speed limit is 25 mph.

Lane said the man, whose name is not being released, was still in critical condition Monday evening at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

“The driver will be facing charges, if he makes it,” Lane said. Lane declined to be more specific about the nature of the charges

The man was alone in his vehicle when the accident took place around 8:45 p.m. Lane said the crash took place during a severe thunderstorm that swept through the area Sunday night. The storm produced hail the size of a baseball, according to the National Weater Service.

Though the bad weather may have been a factor, Lane said there is no doubt the driver was speeding.
