SANFORD — Joe Freiday had two hits, including a two-run homer, and scored twice Thursday night to lead the Plymouth Pilgrims to a 7-5 victory against the Sanford Mainers in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Goodall Park.

Freiday’s homer gave Plymouth (16-18) a 5-0 lead in the third. Shaine Hughes and Dan Hetzel scored for Sanford (17-17) on a fourth-inning error by Plymouth shortstop Tanner Giesel. But Freiday doubled and scored during a two-run fifth inning that gave the Pilgrims a 7-2 lead.

Dalton Thomas scored for the Mainers on a wild pitch in the sixth, and Sanford added two in the seventh, with Harrison Wenson scoring on another wild pitch and Hughes singling home Robbie Knightes.

AMERICAN LEGION

STAPLES CROSSING 14, SACO & BIDDEFORD SAVINGS 3: Luke Stankovich’s grand slam in the seventh invoked the mercy rule as top-seeded Staples Crossing (16-2) won the American Legion Zone 4 playoffs with a victory against second-seeded Saco & Biddeford Savings at South Berwick.

Both teams advance to the Legion state tournament in South Portland, with Staples playing the Zone 3 runner-up, and Saco & Biddeford Savings the Zone 3 winner.

JUNIOR LEGION

WESTBROOK 12, GORHAM 0: Paysen Hodgkins had two hits and scored a run for Westbrook, which used a seven-run second inning to down Gorham in five innings in a playoff game at Westbrook.

Westbrook advanced to the state tournament that starts Saturday at USM in Gorham.

YANKEE FORD 4, BONNY EAGLE 3: Logan McCarthy barely beat the throw home from short on Pat Sullivan’s sixth-inning grounder, scoring the winning run in a playoff victory for Yankee Ford (15-3) against Bonny Eagle (12-6) at Portland.

Yankee Ford advanced to the double-elimination tournament in Gorham as the second seed and will play third-seeded Saco & Biddeford Savings of Westbrook at 1 p.m. Saturday.
