An inmate was seriously injured Thursday night at York County Jail after jumping from a second-floor railing in an apparent suicide attempt, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The 53-year-old woman jumped over the railing to the floor below, a drop of about 12 feet. Sheriff Bill King said the woman was distraught about her legal situation and characterized her actions as a suicide attempt.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford. King said the woman has a broken shoulder, two broken ankles, a broken nose, a concussion and a possible broken pelvis.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
