A dump truck lost its power and steering on Route 22 in Gorham Tuesday morning, causing traffic backups for hours as crews investigated and removed the truck.

The Gorham Sand & Gravel truck being driven by Thomas Brooks, 56, of Standish crashed around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday after the truck lost power, causing it to lose its brakes and steering. The truck crashed into a tree but Brooks was not injured, according to Gorham police.

Police said Brooks hit the soft road shoulder as he tried to stop the truck, causing it to go down a ditch and into a tree.

Gorham police and the Maine State Police Commercial Division continue to investigate the accident.

Route 22 was reopened around noon.
