A 7-year-old boy who was missing overnight in Aroostook County was found safe Tuesday morning when he found his way out of the woods.

Tait Margison of Westmanland was found at about 6:15 a.m. by a pedestrian as he was walking home on Westmanland Road about one mile from his home, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service, which assisted in the search.

“Tait was in good spirits after his night in the woods and in great physical condition,” MacDonald said.

Tait was last seen by his father at about 7:20 p.m. Monday when he and his parents went looking for his family’s border collie. When they couldn’t find him, his parents reported the boy missing around 8:30 p.m.

Search crews used K9 units, a helicopter equipped with infrared equipment and people on the ground to look for the boy. The border collie turned up at a neighbor’s house at about 4:30 a.m.

“Fortunately this was a happy ending where we saw a small community come together with trained search and rescue resources to find a lost person,” MacDonald said.
