SOUTH PORTLAND — Morrill Post of South Portland remained alive in the American Legion state tournament Friday by holding on to an 11-8 victory against the Sebago Lakers in an elimination game at Wainwright Fields.

Morrill (2-1) will take on Coffee News of Bangor (3-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the double-elimination tournament. The winner will advance to the Northeast Regional at Bristol, Connecticut. The Lakers were ousted with a 1-2 record.

Ben Conti laced a two-run double and Matt Beecher added a two-run single during a six-run fifth inning that extended Morrill’s lead to 10-1. But the Lakers, trailing 11-4, scored four times in the bottom of the eighth and had the tying run at the plate. Morrill reliever Griffen Kelley induced an inning-ending grounder before pitching a perfect ninth.

Nick Troiano had four of Morrill’s 21 hits, and Sam Troiano and Conti had three each. Max Salevski had three of Sebago’s 14 hits.

COFFEE NEWS OF BANGOR 4, POST 51 3: Johnny Cote dropped a bases-loaded single into right field in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Coffee News in a game between undefeated teams at South Portland.

Peter Kemble scored the winning run after reaching on an error. Kemble advanced to second when Kyle Stevenson was hit by a pitch and to third on Jordan Derrah’s walk.

Post 51 (2-1) will play Staples Crossing (2-1) in an 11 a.m. elimination game Saturday.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE

LENDERS NETWORK 13, PATRIOTS INSURANCE 2: Matt Verrier belted a two-run homer as Lenders (18-2) scored five times in the first inning to take a 5-2 lead over Patriots (3-18) at Portland.

Forrest Chadwick added a two-run homer in the second, helping Lenders push out to an 11-run lead and invoke the mercy rule in the seventh.

Jake Glauser led Lenders with four hits and three runs. Chadwick and Verrier added three hits each, with Chadwick scoring three times and Verrier knocking in four runs.
