YORK – York police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to strangle his sister in a York cemetery Saturday evening.

Sgt. Brian J. Curtin, in a news release, identified the suspect as 50-year-old Francis Gordon Howell of Ogunquit.

Howell was at the First Parish Cemetery with his sister visiting a relative’s grave when he allegedly tried to strangle her. Police responded around 8:11 p.m. after receiving “a frantic 911 call” from Howell’s sister.

Howell fled into a wooded area at the rear of the cemetery but was captured after officers from York teamed up with Kittery and Wells police to set up a perimeter around the cemetery. Howell was charged with aggravated assault – a Class B crime – and is being held at the York County Jail without bail.

The victim suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
