South Portland has received 48 applications for the assistant city manager’s position formerly held by Jon Jennings, said City Manager Jim Gailey.

Jennings, who was formerly president of the Maine Red Claws basketball franchise and a senior White House adviser, became Portland’s city manager in July.

Gailey said he and Mayor Linda Cohen plan to interview eight candidates.

South Portland officials also will be seeking a new city clerk, after Susan Mooney submitted her resignation in July after 14 years in that position and 39 years working for the city, Cohen said.
