The Coast Guard began a search late Tuesday night for an overdue kayaker near Swan’s Island.

In a news release, the Coast Guard said Jackson Day, 18, was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday leaving the Swan’s Island ferry terminal in an 8-foot kayak.

The Coast Guard’s command center in South Portland got a call from Day’s mother Tuesday night informing officials there that Day was overdue from his trip.

Day was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt and shorts. He is about 6 feet tall, weighs 160 pounds, and has dark blond hair and blue eyes.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Day is a summer resident of Swan’s Island, which is near Mount Desert Island.

Two 47-foot motor lifeboats from the Coast Guard station in Southwest Harbor, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Cape Cod, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine Marine Patrol are involved in the search. Anyone with information concerning Day’s whereabouts should contact the Coast Guard at 767-0303.
