York police said a collision Wednesday between a Lexus and a York Police Department cruiser left an officer hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Luke Ernenwein said Officer Jamie Rooney was driving north on Route 1 near Nancy’s Cafe and Catering around 3:12 p.m. when the cruiser’s front end collided with the driver’s side of a silver Lexus with Massachusetts registration. At the time, the Lexus was pulling out of Nancy’s Cafe and Catering.

Despite her injuries, Rooney reported the accident on her car radio. She was taken to York Hospital and released from the hospital Wednesday evening.

Police have not released the names of the man and woman who were in the Lexus. They were taken to York Hospital. The severity of their injuries was not known.

Because the crash involved a police officer, the Maine State Police are investigating the cause. Referring an investigation with personal injury to an independent police agency is standard. State police Sgt. James Urquhart could not be reached Wednesday evening.

York police said the accident forced them to close one lane of Route 1 for about two hours.
