As a lifelong political conservative, I cannot understand the current fascination with Donald Trump.

My fellow Republicans can’t be serious about a Trump nomination – he could never win a general election. We desperately need a leader who will command the respect of our allies and our enemies. Our next president must be able to lead our recovery on several fronts. A carnival barker can’t do that.

Perhaps some liberals, disguised as Republicans, are expressing support for Trump to skew the early polls. Perhaps some people want to see Trump debate against top-tier candidates, to see how they handle him, or how he handles them. Perhaps people want entertainment or comic relief.

We have dozens of serious problems, and we need a strong, thoughtful and capable president with fresh ideas and a Cabinet full of the best people, to restore our country to its proper place, and to get our economy moving in the right direction.
