PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Portsmouth police say a Maine woman accused of leaving her brother’s dog in a hot car has abandoned the animal, and its owner has made no attempt to contact authorities.

Twenty-one-year-old Nakita Haller of Portland was charged with two counts of animal cruelty on Monday, two days after she is accused of leaving the dog in a car in Portsmouth for more than two hours with just the windows cracked.

Authorities say Haller called police hours after officers removed the dog and took it to a veterinary hospital, saying the dog was her brother’s and that she was on her way to the hospital to cooperate. But police say she never showed up, and has refused to identify her brother.

Police said the black lab was sitting in a parking lot for hours with the windows slightly cracked and no water available. A witness spotted the dog barking and immediately called police.

Police monitored the dog and after 45 minutes decided to remove the dog because the animal began to demonstrate additional signs of stress and the interior of the vehicle was heating up.

A locksmith was called to the scene and the dog was rescued. The dog was immediately transported by police cruiser to a local emergency veterinary hospital where veterinarians treated it for moderate dehydration, police said.

When Haller failed to pick the dog up the dog was transported and currently remains at the SPCA in Stratham, New Hampshire.
