Motorists heading south on Sunday afternoon can expect significant delays in Maine and New Hampshire because of high traffic volumes, according to highway officials.

Intermittent delays are expected between Exit 47 in Portland and Exit 36 in Saco, the Maine Turnpike Authority reports. Major delays are also expected between Kennebunk and the New Hampshire state line at the Piscataqua River, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the New Hampshire state website is reporting that traffic has slowed to less than 25 mph on sections of I-95 in Portsmouth, North Hampton and Seabrook.
