Talk on lake steamboats

The Windham Historical Society will present the illustrated talk “Steamboats on Sebago” at 7 p.m. Monday at Windham Veterans Center on Memorial Drive, behind the Windham Mall on Route 302.

The program will detail the history of steamboats on Sebago Lake from 1846 to the 1930s.

The public is welcome to attend. Admission is a $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be available. For more details, call 892-1306.

History, theater and music

Camden Public Library will host the following events this week at 55 Main St.:

Actor Stephen Collins will give a free living history portrayal of “A Search for Justice” at 7 p.m. Tuesday as part of the library’s Civil War series. The one-person play explores the concepts of justice that led to the Civil War.

Author Sarah Moore talks about her book “Flying Colors,” the World War II story of veteran Victor “Vic” Tatelman, now 94, at 2 p.m Wednesday.

The Camden Garden Club will host Lee Schneller, author of “The Ever Blooming Flower Garden: A Blueprint for Continuous Color,” at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

A concert by Claudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Reading Room; tickets are $12 and are available at the library, by calling 236-3440 or online at librarycamden.org/shop.

Momentum Theater will present a free performance of “Ma and Pa’s Spectacularium: A Causality Carnival of Chaos,” at 3 p.m. Friday in Camden’s Harbor Park on the waterfront.

An indoor book sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday to benefit the library’s book fund.

Garden-tending expert

Garden expert Wendy Andresen will lead a new installment of her “Tending the Perennial Garden” lecture series at noon Tuesday at the Merryspring Nature Center at 30 Conway Road.

Andresen will teach attendees how to make the most of their late August gardens by emphasizing management methods such as weeding, proper watering and deadheading plants to encourage new growth. Attendees may bring a small envelope to take home any seeds from Merryspring perennials that have completed their cycle.

Tracey DiSabato-Aust’s seminal gardening volume “The Well-Tended Perennial Garden” will serve as a reference for this talk, copies of which, among other gardening books and tools, will be for sale after the talk.

This is an outdoor program. Guests should wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.

Tuesday Talks are open to the public for $5, with free admittance for Merryspring members.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH

Open house, book sale

The Friends of Libby Library will sponsor an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and a benefit book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Libby Memorial Library on Staples Street.

The open house will feature face painting, balloon animals and popcorn.

Birds and coffee presentation

York County Audubon and Freeport Wild Bird Supply will sponsor a free presentation by naturalist and author Scott Weidensaul at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alheim Commons at Wells Reserve, 100 Laudholm Farm Road.

Weidensaul will explore the wonder and mechanics of bird migration, and the simple, effective ways we can help save birds, from what we plant in our gardens to what coffee we drink. He’ll also talk about his latest passion: the importance of shade-grown coffee.

The event will feature free samplings of some of the finest shade-grown coffee, provided by Birds & Beans coffee, starting at 4:30 p.m. The talk begins at 5:15 p.m., with a Q&A and additional coffee sampling at 6 p.m.

Historic New England guide Cathy Messmer will present “Mrs. Tucker’s Supper,” a culinary history talk and tour, from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Castle Tucker.

Great Books and mystery

The Great Books group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Topsham Public Library at 25 Foreside Road.

The club meets monthly, using The Great Books Foundation Short Story Omnibus, which can be purchased from the Great Books Foundation. New members are always welcome.

A murder mystery evening will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, themed “The Mystery in the Library.” The characters have come out of their books at closing time and Henry VIII has disappeared. What happened to him and who did it?

Registration in person is required so you can choose your character. Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. Space is limited. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.

BUXTON

Royal Lipizzans to perform

The world famous Herrmann’s Original Royal Lipizzan Stallions of Austria, under the direction of Gabriella Herrmann, will appear in a series of charity shows at Hearts & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center, 63 Justin Merrill Road, Buxton, this weekend and next.

Only a few hundred Royal Lipizzans have ever existed at any one time. The breed was barely saved by Gen. George Patton from the Russian advance during World War II.

The performance “Airs Above the Ground” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sept. 4; at 1 p.m. Sunday and Sept. 5 and 6; and at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

ST. GEORGE

Town history talk, supper

Jim Skoglund will present a talk on town history at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the St. George Grange Hall on Wiley’s Corner Road.

Skogland’s previous talk, offered in July, left audiences asking for more details on St. George’s history. This illustrated talk will focus on the town’s ethnic groups, fishing, granite and other topics as time permits.

A potluck supper will be held at 6:30 and all are invited to both supper and program. There is no charge, but a collection will be taken. For more details, call Skoglund at 372-8893.

Soldiers Memorial Library will celebrate its 100th anniversary at 1 p.m. Saturday at 85 Main St.
