Margaritas, a Mexican restaurant on Brown Street, has closed after 18 years.

The restaurant announced the closing on its Facebook page last week, saying that while the closure is “disappointing,” it’s not expected to affect any of the other 25 Margaritas locations in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

“All employees at this location have been offered positions at our other restaurants while we explore new opportunities in the greater Portland area,” the post read.

Mike Caldwell, marketing manager at Margaritas’ corporate offices in Portsmouth, said the company owned the building on Brown Street and got an opportunity to sell it to a developer. It was, he said, “the right move at the right time.”

“It was a smart move for us as a company,” Caldwell said. “We still have a presence (in Portland) at our St. John Street location, and we’re actually looking to expand in the greater Portland area. Unfortunately, those deals aren’t close enough to let you know where, but we are looking to continue to grow in southern Maine.”

Margaritas has one other location in Portland, at 242 St. John St.
