A Cape Elizabeth elementary school teacher is one of three finalists for Maine’s 2016 Teacher of the Year.

Talya Edlund teaches third grade at Pond Cove Elementary School. The other finalists are Brenda LaVerdiere, a fourth grade teacher at Academy Hill School in Wilton, and Mia Morrison, who teaches English and technology at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft.

LaVerdiere has been teaching at Academy Hill School since 1999, and her entire career – all at RSU 9 – spans 37 years. Morrison, an early adopter of using iTunes U in K-12 classrooms, was recognized by Apple in 2013 as a Distinguished Educator.

The three finalists were selected from the 16 teachers identified as the county finalists. After personal interviews and a school site visit, the winner is selected in October. The state Department of Education program is managed by Educate Maine, a business-led education advocacy organization.
