Local fire officials and game wardens were searching Friday night for a 9-year-old girl who was reported missing after swimming in the Mattawamkeag River in northern Penobscot County.

The rescue call came in about 6:30 p.m., according to a police dispatcher.

He didn’t have much information but said the girl, who had gone swimming, did not return. He didn’t know whether she was swimming alone or where she was from.

Authorities were searching the area of the river near the Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park Road. The Mattawamkeag River branches off from the larger Penobscot River just north of Lincoln and run northeast.
