I was shocked by what to me felt like personal attacks on Mayor Michael Brennan recently by a few members of the City Council and members of the school board. That said, I feel compelled to provide a bit of balance in describing who Michael Brennan is.

I first met Michael when we both worked for United Way in 1990. I quickly grew to admire my new friend because of his dedication to advocating in Augusta on behalf of United Way social service agencies and the tens of thousands served by them.

As a young husband and father, I took the risky step of opening a new business in 1991. I asked Michael’s advice on where to locate this new Play It Again Sports franchise.

He urged me to look seriously at Marginal Way because the store could be a catalyst for economic growth in that area. Good advice. He remained a trusted adviser throughout the course of my ownership.

Over the subsequent years, I watched Michael become one of the most highly regarded legislators in Augusta. He had the reputation of being a tireless, innovative legislative leader and advocate for his constituents while always taking the high road in working with his colleagues from both parties.

Michael’s passion for educational reform and progressive educational thinking inspired me to change careers six years ago and become a classroom teacher.

Michael is a doer. He is intelligent, creative, funny and, above all, compassionate. And he is resilient enough to survive this political ambush.

Portland is in a good place right now and has been over the last four years. Personally, I’m not surprised.

Good luck, Michael. I, for one, am very grateful you continue to put yourself out there in the thoughtful, professional way you always have.
