BIDDEFORD — A minivan plowed through a window and into the dining area of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Spruce Street Saturday morning, injuring several people.

Owner Steve Sparangis said the restaurant was crowded with Saturday morning regulars when an elderly man drove through the mostly glass wall of the restaurant at Spruce and Elm streets about 10:10 a.m.

Biddeford Fire Department Capt. Rick Dussault said six people, including the driver and a passenger in the minivan, were injured. Officials described their injuries as non-life-threatening.

The six were taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford for treatment. As of Saturday night, Biddeford police had not released the identities of the driver or the others who were injured, or information about their condition.

No staff members were injured in the crash. Sparangis, who owns 14 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in Maine, said the vehicle came to rest about 20 feet into the restaurant.

He said a table in the restaurant stopped the minivan and protected one customer from being hit by it.

Sparangis said employees were working to get at least the drive-thru reopened sometime Saturday afternoon, but there was no answer when the restaurant was called Saturday night.

Sparangis estimated the damage to the building in the thousands of dollars.

Dussault said the building’s structure was not damaged by the crash.
