High school boosters meeting Wednesday

The Old Orchard Beach High School Boosters will hold a special fall semester meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Ola Brownrigg High School Library, East Emerson Cummings Boulevard.

Topics will include the car show on Sept. 19, the fall work schedule and other business points.

The group will meet on the third Wednesday of each month. All parents whose children attend the high school are invited to participate.

The boosters aid all extracurricular activities such as athletic teams, band, clubs, class night and class treasuries, and provide citizenship awards at graduation time to students furthering their education.

Historical society selling discounted water-park tickets

Old Orchard Beach Historical Society is selling discounted tickets to Aquaboggan Waterpark at Saco through Saturday at 4 Portland Ave.

A limited supply of tickets has been made available to the historical society through the generosity of the Hirst family, longtime supporters of Old Orchard Beach Historical Society.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Admission to the museum is free.

Family-friendly music festival at Deering Oaks

A free Reggae Music Festival, featuring local DJs and local reggae artists, will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Deering Oaks.

The family-friendly event will feature face painting, a bounce house and other child-friendly activities. Jamaican and vegan food and craft vendors will sell their products.

There will be several live musical performances, a kids’ dance contest, children’s games and more.

Eight-week drawing class for adults offered at library

Portland Public Library will host an eight-week drawing class for adults, ages 55 and older, from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 27, in the Community Room at Peaks Island Community Building.

Co-sponsored with Portland Public Library, this class will introduce and review techniques in drawing and sketching.

Preregistration is required, and participants are expected to attend all sessions.

Marine scientist to lecture on coping with sea-level rise

The Marine & Environmental Research Institute will host the lecture “Understanding and Coping With Sea Level Rise” by internationally prominent marine ecologist, paleontologist and oceanographer Dr. Jeremy Jackson at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Center for Environmental Studies, 55 Main St.

Poet laureate Wesley McNair to read from work, reminisce

Maine’s Poet Laureate Wesley McNair will give a reading of his poetry at 7 p.m. Thursday as part of the September “First Thursday” program at the Orr’s Island Library, 1699 Harpswell Islands Road on Route 24.

McNair will tell the story of how he developed as a poet, using poems to illustrate his recollections.

The reading will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a book-signing.

Art opening, author and folk music on tap at library

Camden Public Library, 55 Main St., will host the following events this week:

 An opening art reception for Artist of the Month Sandy Cirillo will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Cirillo’s exhibit “Fiber Fantasy” was created with fibers and other materials for an experience in tactile imagery and contrasts.

The group Sassafras Stomp, featuring Johanna Davis on fiddle and Adam Nordell on guitar and banjo, will perform a set of high-energy folk music from Maine and Montana at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library coffeehouse. Admission is $5.

Also on Thursday, author Kate Braestrup will talk about her new book, “Anchor & Flares: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hope & Service,” at 7 p.m. Braestrup is one of the first chaplains ever appointed to the Maine Warden Service.

Friends of the Gingerbread House will host an open house and tour of the historic house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and again on Oct. 3 at The Gingerbread House, 500 Main St.

A Gingerbread House-inspired Advent calendar, created by artist Ann Reibel, will be available for purchase. The calendar features 25 window flaps that open to feature seasonal pictures.

Registrations are being accepted for a 5K trail run/walk being held at 8 a.m. Sept. 12 at Skyline Farm at 95 The Lane.

The course consists of two loops through Skyline Farm’s woods and field trails.

Preregistration fee is $20 at www.running4free.com until 4 p.m. Sept. 11. Race-day registration fee is $25 from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Skyline Farm.

The first 50 people who preregister will receive a free T-shirt.

Author to share stories about living in wartime England

Author Joyce Lovely will present the talk “Ice Cream, Gas Masks and God: A Memoir of World War II and Postwar Britain” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road.

Lovely will recount growing up in Liverpool, England, amid air raids and bombs. She will read excerpts from her book, sharing some of the highlights, as well as other stories of wartime England. Questions will be welcomed.

Slide presentation covers ‘Waterboro’s Golden Age’

“Remembering Waterboro’s Golden Age” will be the theme of a slide presentation to be presented by Jim Carll at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Waterborough Historical Society’s meeting at the air-conditioned Grange Hall, 31 West Road.

The talk will include a collection of photographs taken before the 1911 and 1947 fires that swept through parts of town.

Webinar on communities that are dementia-friendly

HomeHealth Visiting Nurses and MemoryWorks will host the webinar “Dementia-Friendly Communities” from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at 15 Industrial Park Road.

The presentation will be followed by an open discussion featuring representatives from the National Institute on Aging, the Administration for Community Living, and the national Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center.

Attendees are welcome to exchange ideas on creating communities that are safe and respectful, provide support, and work toward quality of life for people living with dementia and their families.

Talk to focus on proposed creation of national park

Eliza Donoghue of the Natural Resources Council of Maine will lead a talk at 6 p.m. Thursday at Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library detailing Elliotsville Plantation Inc.’s proposal to create a new national park and national recreation area east of Baxter State Park.

Elliotsville Plantation Inc. has proposed donating up to 150,000 acres to the national park service to create Maine’s second national park.

Donoghue will share photographs and film to provide a glimpse of the land and its special features and will describe the journey toward making the dream of a national park a reality.

Online bidding in chamber’s auction starts Wednesday

Online bidding begins Wednesday in the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual auction. The online bidding runs through Oct. 5, with the live auction set for Oct. 14.

All money raised supports the chamber’s mission of advocating for the commercial and economic development of the region.

The live auction items will be clearly identified on the website, and absentee bidding will be available for those who cannot attend the live event, which will be held at the Rockport Opera House, 6 Central St.
