Beachgoers tried to help a basking shark that washed ashore in Lubec on Wednesday, but the animal died, according to WCSH TV 6.

Mark Olson sent the station photos and video that showed concerned people attending to the fish, a plankton eater that usually occupies deep waters.

The fish was estimated to be about 30 feet long.

The shark washed up along the narrows, just south of the bridge between Lubec and Campobello Island.

People tried keeping the shark alive by dumping buckets of seawater over its gills and keeping its skin wet, but it still ended up dying.
