A crowded field of candidates is running for municipal office in Biddeford, with voters set to choose the next mayor and fill all nine City Council seats on Nov. 3.

Thursday was the deadline for candidates to submit nomination papers. City Clerk Carmen J. Morris released the final list of candidates at the end of the day.

Two-term Mayor Alan Casavant will be challenged by Daniel Parenteau, a business consultant who has not held elected office.

Both men are lifelong Biddeford residents.

Voters also will elect nine city councilors, seven from specific wards and two who will fill at-large seats.

Clement Fleurent, a current at-large councilor, is not running for re-election. Councilor Marc Lessard is running for re-election to an at-large seat.

Another competitive race is shaping up for the Ward 5 council seat.

Incumbent Bobby “Bob” Mills will face a crowded field of challengers. Also qualifying to represent the downtown ward are Carol A. Boisjoly, Milton Truman, Nathan Bean, Karl R. Reed Jr. and Perry Aberle, a former Ward 5 councilor who was the youngest person ever to be elected to the City Council.

A former city councilor, Richard Rhames, will go up against incumbent Stephen St. Cyr in Ward 3.

Incumbent councilor Michael Swanton of Ward 1 faces a challenge from Kathleen E. Russell.

Current council president John McCurry Jr. of Ward 2 is running unopposed.
