A 17-year-old boy has been charged with arson, criminal threatening and aggravated criminal mischief in connection with several fires set in Baileyville on Aug. 25.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office said that the teen is responsible for fires at two buildings owned by Woodland Pulp and Paper Co. on Mill Street. The structures, a storage building and a two-bay garage, were badly damaged.

A nearby resident reported that the teen also stole mail and set it on fire by the side of the road.

The boy, who is unidentified because of his age, was arrested on Aug. 28. Officers followed him into the woods and, when approached by fire marshal investigators and Indian Township police, the teen threatened them with a knife. They were able to take him into custody after they drew their guns and the boy dropped the knife.

The teen is being held at the Charleston Correctional Facility.
