A Portland man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after leaving the scene of an accident on Franklin Street and then crashing on Interstate 295 at Tukeys Bridge shortly before midnight Friday.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said the driver was Jabril Mohamud of Portland. As of Saturday night, he was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center.

McCausland said Mohamud was operating a four-door Hyundai sedan that crashed into another vehicle on the Exit 7 northbound ramp. No one was hurt in that accident.

Mohamud then drove onto Interstate 295, traveling north in the southbound lane. His car became airborne and landed on its roof.

Mohamud was trapped inside the car until rescue crews could free him and take him to the hospital.

Portland police reconstructed the crash and assisted Maine State Police, who are investigating.

The northbound lane was shut down for three hours.
