Saturday night featured another one of those games that demonstrates how the season has gone for the Portland Sea Dogs.

The New Britain Rock Cats pitchers were wild, issuing 11 walks and hitting two batters.

Portland even took an 8-3 lead after two innings.

And the Sea Dogs still lost.

New Britain pounced on Portland’s pitching and porous defense to rally for an 11-9 victory before a crowd of 7,080 at Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs (51-89) committed a franchise-record eight errors, allowing the Rock Cats (69-69) back in it.

Manuel Margot homered for the Sea Dogs, part of a 3-for-5 night, including a walk, three RBI and three stolen bases.

Sam Travis reached base 5 of 6 times with an RBI double, three walks and a hit batter. He upped his team-leading batting average to .300. His on-base percentage is now .384.

Dustin Lawley had two of Portland’s 10 hits. It wasn’t enough.

Sea Dogs starter Luis Diaz (2-10, 5.47 ERA) left with two outs in the fifth, having allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks.

Diaz’s season was quite a downer after last year’s promise. He was promoted to Portland in June of last year and compiled a 3.72 ERA. The Red Sox even sent Pedro Martinez to Hadlock to work with him.

But Diaz struggled mightily at the start of this season – a 7.53 ERA through April and May. He settled down somewhat for a 4.51 ERA the rest of the way.

Diaz, 23, will be a minor league free agent after the season.

Henri Quevedo followed Diaz on Saturday and gave up three runs (one earned), including Noel Cuevas’ two-run homer in the sixth.

Quevedo left after a leadoff double in the seventh with Portland up 9-7. But reliever Kyle Martin (2-1) allowed that runner to score and three more – on three hits, two walks and a wild pitch.

Tzu-Wei Lin led off the ninth with a single. But New Britain closer Carlos Estevez, featuring a 99 mph fastball, retired the next three batters (two by strikeout) for his 13th save.
