1. Greely: The Rangers have all of their starters back, led by Sam Burgoyne and Aidan Roberts. Greely finished second in the Class A state final last year by two shots to champion Scarborough. The team is deep, with the 10th player supporting a 41-stroke average in preseason.

2. Cape Elizabeth: The Capers, young, talented and deep, have two players back, including girls’ junior champ Lauren Schonewolf, from a team that reached the Class B state team championship match. Newcomers include Maine Junior champ Austin Legge, a freshman.

3. Thornton Academy: The Golden Trojans have their top five golfers back from a team that finished fourth in Class A and won the SMAA overall title. Schoolgirl champion Hashilla Rivai shot a 74 in the team competition. Greg Kalagias and Logan Picard are solid golfers. Jordan Laplume tied for third with a 76 in last year’s girls’ tourney.

4. Cheverus: The Stags may have extra incentive this fall after having just missed qualifying for the state team tournament last year. Most of the roster returns, including senior Alex Jacobs, who had a 39-stroke average. The Stags have added talented freshman Tom Higgins.

5. Scarborough: The Red Storm have four golfers back from last year’s Class A state champions. Drew Kane shot a pair of 75s in both the state team and individual competition. Mitchell Wedge shot an 80 in the team competition last year.
