Austin Chase, Gray-New Gloucester football: Chase scored three touchdowns and gained 268 yards on 23 carries as the Patriots broke a 23-game losing streak over three seasons with a 44-37 win over Mountain Valley. He also rushed for a 2-point conversion and had 12 tackles on defense.

HONORABLE MENTION

Matt Polewaczyk, Falmouth soccer: He assisted on the game-winning goal, then added a goal in a 3-1 come-from-behind victory against Gray-New Gloucester in the season opener. He also scored the second-half winner in a 3-1 victory against Kennebunk.

Henry Quesada, North Yarmouth Academy soccer: After taking two years away from high school soccer due to injuries, Quesada scored three goals in his debut as NYA beat Traip Academy, 5-1.

Luke Laverdiere, Yarmouth cross country: He won the season-opening meet at Pineland Farms by 28 seconds against a strong field that included defending Class B champion Freeport and defending Class C champion Maine Coast Waldorf. His time of 16:18 has been the fastest 5K in the state this season.

Kialeigh Marston, Bonny Eagle cross country: Shaking off a junior season spoiled by nagging injuries, Marston signaled her return to form by posting the top time at the annual SMAA Relays in Saco, nearly 19 seconds faster than runner-up Anna Slager of Gorham, the defending champion.

HONORABLE MENTION

Kristen Levesque, Scarborough field hockey: Levesque had a goal and an assist in each of Scarborough’s first two victories, 2-0 over Marshwood and 3-2 over Massabesic in overtime, then added a goal in a 4-0 win against Deering on Tuesday.

Lauren McIntyre, Portland field hockey: McIntyre scored five goals in the Bulldogs’ first two games – both 3-0 victories over Noble and Biddeford.

Breanna Morrill, Yarmouth field hockey: Morrill had five assists in Yarmouth’s first two victories, 6-0 over Lake Region and 4-0 over Gray-New Gloucester. Morrill then scored a goal in a 3-2 win over Greely.
