A North Carolina man died Tuesday when he was hit by a box truck on Route 3 in Bar Harbor, police said.

Bar Harbor police said in a press release that Roger Beghtol, 79, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, was standing outside his 2010 Buick Lacrosse on a dirt shoulder off the westbound lane when an eastbound 2007 Chevrolet truck crossed the centerline and hit the Buick around 1 p.m.

Beghtol was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he died at 2:29 p.m. A passenger in the Buick, Sally Beghtol, 73, was taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the box truck, Miguel A. Garcia, 41, of Bangor, was taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An 18-year-old male passenger in the truck was not hurt.

The truck is registered to Installed Building Products of Hermon.

The accident happened in the Hulls Cove area, known locally as The Bluffs. Route 3 was closed for several hours after the crash. Both vehicles were demolished and had to be removed from the site overlooking Frenchman Bay.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
