GEORGETOWN – At this splendid Maine coastal property, wildlife isn’t so much a visitor as a part of daily life. Eagles and osprey soar above, and through; seals and porpoises, and in spring even minke whales, can be spotted in the waters on which the home has almost 100 feet of rocky frontage; and your contemplative gaze across the mouth of the broad Sheepscot to Southport and other islands may be interrupted by a sea otter speeding along the rocks, with a crab for lunch.

Easterly orientation on this side of the bridge-accessed island that is Georgetown ensure breathtaking dawns and moonrises, and equally dramatic storms, at times. Perched on its acre-plus lot, the home is oriented to maximize enjoyment of the setting, and provides not only stunning ocean views but also sits amid perfectly naturally landscaped surroundings, among whose highlights is a gravel-paths garden of hardy perennials and shrubs, and granite both from the lot and from a barn foundation in Somerville.

It is scarcely a figure of speech to say that the 1,920-square-foot home “grew” here, beginning life in 1985 as a post-and-beam saltbox; being regularly updated, and  twice expanded, most recently in 2008/09. The open-concept, radiant-heat main level extends to a large deck for added fine-weather living, and has a gem of a kitchen, in which honed granite counters reflect the hues of the shoreline rocks, custom cabinetry is birdseye maple, and a vintage Glenwood cookstove sits next to a Bosch stainless oven. Floor tile is travertine here; but in the generous living and dining areas, it’s limestone, and full of intriguing detail. Down a short hall are the second/guest bedroom, and full bath.

On the cathedral-ceilinged, exposed-beam second floor is a back-to-front office/studio that has a private balcony from which elevated views are especially glorious. The floor-to-ceiling, brick, wood-burning fireplace is two-sided, shared with the adjacent master bedroom. The suite has a wall of cool built-ins framing a “lookout” window, and nautical character. The recently updated bath features beautiful tile work, with darker-stone bands and white subway tile in pretty contrast.

The daylight, walkout basement has a great end-to-end workshop with sink; “engine room” (utilities) with two oil tanks; and a separate-entrance storage room. Amenities include whole-house generator and a satellite dish.
