An 18-year-old Greely High School student who died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning committed suicide, according to the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
Rescue personnel were called to the young man’s home early Tuesday. School officials announced the death to students in classroom meetings and to parents in an email message. The school provided counselors to students who wanted to meet with them, and hosted a community gathering and candlelight vigil that evening.
Officials declined to identify the student by name or discuss how he died.
Greely High School is in Cumberland and serves students from Cumberland, North Yarmouth and Chebeague Island.
