In the article about hearings on our governor’s decision to deny food stamps to singles with $5,000 in assets, I read at the end that a Department of Health and Human Services spokesman insisted the rule would go into effect in a couple of weeks, regardless of the information uncovered in the hearing.

I am so pleased that our state government truly strives to do things by the book. The trouble is, in this case, the book is “Alice in Wonderland.” “No, no,” said the Queen. “Sentence first – verdict afterwards.”

We can do better.
