Fryeburg nips Kennebunk, 1-0, in field hockey

Bridget Tweedie scored the lone goal of the game with 9:11 left to lift Fryeburg (10-3) to a 1-0 win over Kennebunk (9-4) on Monday in Fryeburg on Monday.

Tweedie brought the ball downfield on a breakaway and dodged three defenders before pulling right and shooting to the opposite side from the top of the circle.

Bridget Fahey blocked eight shots for Fryeburg and Olivia Kudas had 11 saves for the Rams.

Takara McDermott’s overtime goal lifted Wells (4-9) to a 1-0 win over host Old Orchard Beach (2-12).

 Mariah Wilcox scored three first-half goals to lift the Greely (6-9) to a 3-0 win over Gray-New Gloucester (6-8) at Cumberland.

Meredith Dwyer, Charlotte Benoit, Danita Storey and Alyssa Coyne all had assists for Greely.

Lizzie Brown made 11 saves in net for Greely while Adriana Kimball had 17 for the Patriots.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Caroline Swaney’s screened shot from the 18-yard line found the corner of the net to give Greely (11-0) a halftime lead over Falmouth (5-4-2) in a 2-0 shutout at Cumberland.

Jocelyn Mitiguy added a second-half goal from just outside the box for the Rangers.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Haley DaGraca hit an 18-yard shot 3:24 into overtime that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal, giving St. Joseph’s (8-7, 5-3 GNAC) a 3-2 overtime victory against Mt. Ida (2-8-2, 0-6-2) at Newton, Massachusetts.

MEN’S SOCCER: Connor Keefe had a pair of goals and an assist as Bowdoin (5-3-2) scored four times in the second half for a 4-1 victory against Babson (7-5-1) at Brunswick.

 Brett Mattos scored 22 minutes into the game as St. Joseph’s (8-3-1, 4-1) won, 2-0, over Mount Ida (8-4-1, 4-1-1) in a GNAC game at Standish. Johnny Thomas assisted on the winning goal.

Sean Baker added an unassisted score 32 seconds before the half.

FIELD HOCKEY: Kara Kelly poked the ball into the net 3:57 into the second overtime, giving St. Joseph’s (9-4, 4-1) a 1-0 a win over Gordon College (5-9, 3-4) at Wenham, Massachusetts.

NBA: Kobe Bryant scored 21 points and Roy Hibbert had 16 rebounds, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 126-83 exhibition rout of Israel’s Maccabi Haifa.

Bryant is about to begin his 20th NBA season more than nine months after undergoing right shoulder surgery.

TENNIS

SHANGHAI MASTERS: John Isner smashed 20 aces to defeat France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-2 in 45 minutes in his opening match at Shanghai.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 16th seed from France, also advanced, beating Spain’s Tommy Robredo 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2.

GENERALI LADIES: Margarita Gasparyan of Russia rallied from a break down in the final set to beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 on the opening day at Linz, Austria.

Also, Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium advanced by beating Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-3, 7-6 (3).

TIANJIN OPEN: Elena Vesnina advanced to the second round in Tianjin, China, beating fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-2, 6-4.

Defending champion Alison Riske of the United States also advanced, beating Han Xinyun of China 6-0, 6-4.

HONG KONG OPEN: Monica Puig advanced to the second round, beating Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand 6-1, 6-2.
