A body found hanging from a tree in woods off Maquoit Road in Brunswick is presumed to be that of a woman who had been missing since Monday night, authorities said.

Cmdr. Mark Waltz of the Brunswick Police Department said he believes 30-year-old Lisa Marie Cox committed suicide.

The woman, who is from Brunswick but had been living in Texas until recently, was staying with friends on Running Brook Lane, off Maquoit Road, not far from Brunswick High School. She left the house late Monday night after arguing with her boyfriend about cigarettes, Waltz said, and didn’t return.

Cox’s body was found just before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning about 150 feet from the house where she and her boyfriend were staying. The two had come from Texas about two weeks ago.

Waltz said police would continue to investigate Cox’s death, including talking to the boyfriend, who was not identified but who police say has been cooperative.

That stretch of Maquoit Road was closed for much of the day Wednesday.

Waltz said Cox’s body would be taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy to determine the cause of her death.
