ALBANY, N.Y. — The Portland Pirates registered their lowest shot total of the season and had their three-game winning streak stopped with a 3-1 loss to the Albany Devils, who won their home opener Saturday evening at the Times Union Center.

Portland posted single-digit shot totals in each period, including five in the first, and finished with 20, after averaging nearly 28 in their first four games.

Albany scored twice in the second period when Reid Boucher got his first of the season at 9:10 and Blake Pietilla tipped in a shot by Seth Helgeson with 2:14 left for his team-leading third goal.

Albany forward Jim O’Brien made it 3-0 early in the third when he finished off a pass from Corey Tripp, 36 seconds after Pirates defenseman Jonathan Racine was sent off for elbowing.

The Pirates beat Albany 4-2 on Friday for a split of the only two games the teams will play against each other this season.

Rookie defenseman Mike Matheson scored his first professional goal on a a slapshot following a pass from Rocco Grimaldi with 2:16 left in the third for Portland, which is winless in its two road games thus far.

Sam Brittain made 29 saves for the Pirates.
