MADISON — Sixth-seeded Waynflete broke a tie with three goals in the final 18 minutes Friday and advanced to the Class C South schoolgirl soccer final with a 4-1 victory against second-ranked Madison.

After Kayla Bess of Madison (11-2-3) made it 1-1 early in the second half, Beata Vest put the Flyers ahead, and Arianna Giguere added two goals in the final eight minutes.

Giguere also gave Waynflete (13-4) a 1-0 halftime lead, scoring off a corner kick from Isabel Canning with 33 seconds remaining.

The Flyers, who had advantages of 14-2 in corner kicks and 19-8 in shots, will be at fourth-seeded Monmouth Academy (12-2-2) in the regional championship game Wednesday.

Madison had a great chance to take a 2-1 lead four minutes after Bess scored, when Madeline Wood got behind the Waynflete defense and ran toward the goal. But Waynflete goalkeeper Ali Pope timed Wood’s final touch well and raced out to make a save just as Wood was preparing to shoot.

Both players were shaken up on the play but returned after the next stoppage.

“There was a little bit of time where we felt the momentum switch to Madison a little bit,” Giguere said. “(Pope’s save) really got the rest of us to take a moment and get composed, and come ready to work for the rest of it.

“We all take responsibility for our keeper getting hurt, and so it meant a lot to us. We weren’t going to let that get into our heads.”

Giguere helped set up what would be the winner with 17:09 remaining, launching a long throw-in into the box, where Vest coaxed the ball into the net.

“Our goal this year is to try to take advantage of my ability to throw it in the box, and so when I threw it in, I knew that my teammates were going to be right there,” Giguere said.

“Beata, who scored, put it right in the net and it was a great feeling.”

The Mustangs will play sixth-ranked Sacopee Valley (8-6-1) or second-seeded Waynflete (12-2-1) in the regional final Wednesday. Those teams meet Saturday.

Hall-Dale allowed its first goal in about a month.
