Cape Elizabeth graduate makes U.S. women’s team

Clare Egan, a 2006 graduate of Cape Elizabeth High who made her World Cup biathlon debut in January, was named the fourth member of the U.S. women’s team Tuesday for the opening three World Cup races in November and December.

The season begins Nov. 29 in Oestersund, Sweden, and continues to Austria and Slovenia before a holiday break.

Joining Egan are Annelies Cook of Saranac Lake, New York, and Vermonters Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville) and Susan Dunklee (Barton).

The men’s team consists of Lowell Bailey of Lake Placid, New York; Tim Burke of Paul Smiths, New York; Sean Doherty of Center Conway, New Hampshire and Leif Nordgren of Marine, Minnesota.

BASKETBALL

D-LEAGUE: The Boston Celtics assigned forward Jordan Mickey and guard/forward James Young to the Maine Red Claws.

Mickey, a 6-foot-8 forward, played in seven preseason contests with the Celtics this year and averaged 5.7 points, 3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 9.8 minutes per game.

He was selected with the 33rd overall pick by Boston in the 2015 NBA draft.

Young, who is in his second NBA season, appeared in seven preseason games for the Celtics this year and averaged 4.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 13.7 minutes per game.

He played in 17 games for the Red Claws last season, averaging 21.5 points while shooting 44.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. .

HOCKEY

AHL: Texas Stars center Devin Shore was selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Month for October.

Shore had eight goals and three assists for 11 points along with a plus-7 rating in nine games for Texas during the month.

Shore, 21, who played three years at the University of Maine, was called up by Dallas and made his NHL debut in Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Boston Bruins, and logged 11 minutes oof play.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Real Madrid and Manchester City became the first teams to reach the second round of the Champions League with victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla.

Madrid earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over previously unbeaten PSG and City won 3-1 in Seville to move atop Group D on nine points, one ahead of Juventus, which eliminated Borussia Moenchengladbach with a 1-1 draw.

Manchester United moved top of Group B thanks to a 1-0 home win over CSKA Moscow.

TENNIS

PARIS MASTERS: Top-ranked Novak Djokovic overcame a slow start to extend his winning streak to 18 matches with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Thomaz Bellucci in his opening match at Paris.

Djokovic, a two-time defending champion in the French capital, is bidding to become the first player to win six Masters 1000 titles in one season this week.

David Ferrer, the 2012 champion, also progressed to the third round by beating Alexandr Dogolpolov and French Open champion Stan Wawrinka beat Bernard Tomic to advance.

WTA ELITE TROPHY: Venus Williams opened in Zhuhai, China, with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over fellow American Madison Keys.

Williams has already won two titles in a resurgent season and could return to the top 10 in the rankings for the first time in more than four years.
